This course is designed to prepare students to read and write medical terminology. Topics include the history of medical terminology; etymology and the history of words, their origins, definitions and pronunciation; vocabulary development; compound word identification; relationship between language and function; structure of the human body; types of medical conditions; common diseases; differential diagnosis; pharmacology and pharmacogenetics. Pre-requisite: none

1. Demonstrate the ability to communicate with a nurse or physician in medical terminology.

This course fulfills the General Education “COMM” component of the General Education Program and provides students with basic skills necessary for basic communication in English. Students will:

– acquire knowledge of specialized terms, definitions and abbreviations used in health care settings
– learn to use and apply terminology related to anatomy, physiology, psychology, sociology, social work, nursing and allied health care
– use computers
