NUR3894 Course Description
is designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore and reflect upon contemporary issues in nursing. Students will develop their understanding of ethical issues, principles of critical thinking, and potential for making positive contributions to the profession. This course involves a combination of readings, discussions, case studies, and other instructional strategies.
This course consists of reading materials on various topics related to the nursing profession and its ethical framework. The unit includes readings on health disparities; bullying; patient advocacy; human trafficking; abuse of power; euthanasia and assisted suicide; political/economic influences on nursing practice; professional ethics in the military; the need for change in nurse leadership practices; empowerment of women in nursing; working in multidisciplinary teams and using technology in nursing. There will be case study assignments that integrate information from readings and discussions into a theoretical framework. Students are expected to meet with faculty members regularly throughout the semester.
NUR3895/3896 Seminar: Nursing Leadership (NUR3895) is designed to develop students’ awareness of how leadership roles affect clinical care and organizational decision-making within the health care setting. The seminar provides students with opportunities to critically examine situations that may affect them as nurses or clinical educators, develop strategies for addressing these situations, assess their own readiness for leadership roles in their current work environment, discuss how others might assist them in addressing those situations through different communication styles, develop an understanding of current trends in leadership development within their current organization or agency/community setting, participate in an experiential learning project that offers hands-on experience with current leadership models and approaches applicable to various health care settings.
This class emphasizes an introduction to concepts of effective leadership from both theoretical perspectives and practical application. Lectures will cover definitions of effective leadership styles including servant-leadership, charismatic leader ship, transformational leader ship , emotional intelligence and conflict management . Students will be required to complete a written reflection before taking the final exam.
NUR3904 Nursing Research (NUR3904) is designed as a capstone course for students enrolled as pre-licensure RNs which integrates principles from research methodology with critical analysis from multiple perspectives (e.g., science vs. nursing). In this course students will investigate important scholarly issues related to research methods as applied by nurses across disciplines such as medicine, public health, social work, education & mental health & community services professionals.
Through directed readings & lecture topics related to selected key research methods used by nurses such as qualitative/quantitative surveys, experimental design & statistical analyses there is considerable focus placed on the application of evidence-based practice. Students apply this knowledge by critically evaluating different frameworks or theories while considering various implications for applying evidence-based practice at both a local & global level.
NUR3913 Advanced Pharmacology (NUR3913) is a two-semester graduate-level pharmacology course that provides the student with advanced knowledge about drugs used in acute care settings (e.g., anti-infective agents , anticoagulants , vasopressors , narcotics , etc.). Students learn pharmacologic principles including basic pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics with particular emphasis on antimicrobial therapy (e.g., treatment options & rationale ). These principles are applied clinically through individualized patient monitoring using monitoring tools that monitor vital signs & parameters such as respiratory rate & rhythm – particularly relevant when caring for patients being treated with sedatives or opioids . This also serves as an introduction to using continuous cardiac monitoring devices during short-term intubation procedures.
NUR3920 Clinical Skills Practicum I (NUR3920) is designed for pre-licensure RNs who have completed NUR3800 Nursing Research . It provides supervised experience which demonstrates competencies necessary for effective teaching during clinical experiences including managing risk factors appropriate for specialty areas ; implementing therapeutic protocols within scope-of-practice ; assessing outcomes related to patient outcomes ; developing documentation standards ; providing safe treatment protocols while meeting quality expectations ; interacting effectively with patients / family / physicians / colleagues / public relations persons . The purpose is also preparation for success during long term clinical experiences / rotations .
The student conducts assigned clinical experiences under direct supervision which include: staff person specific duties prior obtaining academic/clinical credentials via approval process , assessing patients who require additional diagnostic tests beyond those required by school policy , educating patients/families about education-related services available at school institution or agency/community setting , instructing patients regarding discharge processes when leaving hospital stay or facility through documentation provided under direction .
Upon completion of NUR3920 Clinical Skills Practicum I the student demonstrates proficiency performing all skills outlined on form NUA-FSCL-001 followed by form NUA-FSCL-002 .
