The purpose of this course is to examine the field of patrol and community policing. Students will explore the theoretical foundations, techniques, and applications of patrol and community policing; they will study the history, role and function of law enforcement agencies in communities; they will learn about contemporary issues affecting policing today; they will research various topics related to police work. In addition, students will discuss issues related to crime prevention in urban areas.

Students will be exposed to critical issues and ethical dilemmas that police officers confront in their daily jobs. Discussion of law enforcement agencies in the United States, focusing on constitutional and legal issues related to patrol and community policing. Included: police oversight; practical considerations for prevention-oriented policing; federal, state and local policing; criminal justice systems; defining crime, crime patterns and statistics; community relationships with law enforcement; intergovernmental relations in policing; citizen involvement in policing; and professionalism, social responsibility, ethics, diversity and multiculturalism.
