Students will explore data-based policing strategies, including the historical development of data-driven policing practices, current issues surrounding data collection, analysis and visualization, as well as statistical methods for crime mapping. These analyses are needed by all law enforcement agencies with a mission to keep citizens safe, and they are particularly important in relation to crime prevention and community safety. The course will use real-life case studies, in-depth interviews with police practitioners, as well as relevant literature.
