MFA627 Course Introduction
This course is designed to prepare students for the final project of their MFA in Creative Writing program. It is intended as an introduction to Speculative Fiction Writing, with particular emphasis on science fiction and fantasy, and is open to first-year and sophomore students only. The class will provide the reader with a broad overview of the form, some understanding of its history, and a basic understanding of how the genre works in terms of structure and narrative.

MFA627 Course Description
Students will continue to develop their techniques for writing speculative fiction in a series of short story projects. Some students will learn the basics of structuring stories, and some students may write one or two longer works. The course will be open to both fiction writers and nonfiction writers; it is not limited to science fiction, fantasy, horror, or other particular genres. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in workshops with local writers on writing for the stage and screen. Prerequisite: MFA102 (

A grade of C (65%) is for an A and B assignment with no Incomplete grade (I).
An incomplete grade may not be used to stay in the course.
