Course Description: The Young Adult Fiction Writing II course is a continuation of the Young Adult Fiction Writing I (MFA626) that was previously offered. Through the reading, writing and revision process, students will engage in an examination of young adult literature and the ways in which it reflects upon our own world. This course includes revising, editing and publishing fiction novels aimed at this particular audience. Students are required to do their own research on genre trends and literary movements.

The MFA626 course provides students with the opportunity to continue to refine and deepen their craft as writers of adult fiction. Students will be expected to apply their knowledge of craft through a series of readings and brief writing assignments. As a culminating project, they will be asked to produce a manuscript in the form of a novel.

This course is designed for students who have completed one or more MFA courses, have read the workshop requirements for Young Adult Fiction Writing I (MFA626), and plan to write a novel-length work based on a young adult theme. Students will examine existing work in this genre, learn basic writing techniques and language devices appropriate to this genre, and explore elements of the craft that are unique to this genre. Most importantly, students will participate in drafting exercises that emphasize building characters, plot and voice.
