Young Adult Fiction Writing I (MFA526) is a one-credit course that is designed for students in MFA programs or those who wish to develop their skills in developing a story of young adult fiction. Students will write about characters, plot, setting, and voice in their own stories. They will be introduced to current trends and practices in the genre. Students will read and analyze examples of good YA fiction and related scholarship.

Course Description
This course is designed to help students expand their writing skills in the area of young adult fiction and non-fiction. The course is structured in a way that will provide students with the opportunity to practice different genres and learn how to compose a multi-paragraph essay that includes a thesis statement, organizational structure and supporting details. Each student will present his or her final draft of the final essay. This course may be repeated for credit with different emphasis.

COURSE DESCRIPTION A weeklong intensive workshop for students interested in writing young adult fiction. Instruction and support is provided by members of the MFA faculty. Students will have the opportunity to meet with classmates, discuss their writing, and develop their writing skills through exercises, readings, and discussions. The focus of this course is to encourage writing of a high standard that will be published in a professional magazine or book. The instructor reserves the right to modify exercises in the course of instruction as deemed necessary.
