This course will explore a variety of canonical and lesser-known Victorian texts from the following genres: history, fiction, poetry, drama, literary criticism, journalism and children’s literature. In addition to studying the various materials in depth and paying close attention to their context within their time period, this course will also focus on writing about these texts and working as an academic writer.

What is the LIT510 Course about?

This course explores the early Victorian novel from the 1830s to the 1850s, a period of extraordinary social and literary change in Britain. We will focus on aspects such as social reform, political reaction and commercialisation, which influenced and shaped the genres of Victorian fiction, poetry, drama and art.

LIT510 Course Objectives

1. To examine the techniques of representation in nineteenth-century British literature and film, with a particular emphasis on how representations have contributed to the formation and maintenance of social identity in Victorian culture; 2. To explore the extent to which literary representations of women authors influence our views about women’s lives, roles and responsibilities; 3. To explore the extent to which literary representations of women authors are political (in relation to issues such as feminism), cultural or commercial (in terms of women’s employment);

LIT510 Course Pre-requisites

– LIT510 is a graduate level Literature course and is recommended for any student who has completed LIT100 or LIT101. We strongly recommend this course for all students (Pre-1985) entering the University of Sydney to study Victorian literature at Master’s level.

Students will be provided with a copy of the relevant Section One Unit Syllabus which will give further information about the course and outline the content and requirements.
