This is the second course in a two-course sequence in women’s and gender studies. The course will explore various aspects of gender through a comparative study of the U.S., France, and Britain from 1750-1950. The course will focus on how difference is constructed through language, gendered stereotypes, social expectations, and traditional notions of propriety.

In this course we will read, discuss and analyze texts that explore gender roles in a variety of contexts. This course will focus on the ways gender is socially constructed in social institutions. It will examine the ways gendered norms are communicated through written texts, images, speech, and other means.
