Course Goals and Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to: (a) read literature with a complex understanding of texts through close analysis of them, focusing on the author’s use of language and its effects on meaning; (b) gain experience with close reading, literary analysis, argumentation, and research; (c) develop skills for integrating sources into a synthesis paper; (d) become acquainted with sources that provide different perspectives about an aspect of the literature studied;

Upon successful completion of LIT315, students will be able to: 1. Describe the key themes, narrative structures and literary styles of major twentieth century American authors. 2. Compare and contrast selected twentieth century American authors in terms of their thematic, narrative and stylistic characteristics. 3. This course is designed to be a capstone experience for undergraduate students in the English major. It is not required for the English minor or concentration. In order to complete this course, students must have completed at least one other course from the English major and one course outside of the major with an “A” or better grade. Students should also prepare for a writing intensive final exam with the faculty advisor.
