This course explores the intellectual and cultural contexts of literary texts. Through readings, debates, and discussions on the relations between literature, culture, and society, this course will explore topics such as poetry and drama in the Western canon; the relationship between fiction and nonfiction; the representation of gender in early modern England; autobiography; and more. Emphasis is placed on close reading of individual texts with attention to how they relate to broader issues in history and culture. Students are expected to do critical analysis of written

What is the Difference between Literature and the Mind?
The issues that we will consider in LIT239 are central to questions concerning:
the nature of human consciousness, including the relationship between mind and body, and the division between subjective and objective knowledge;
what we know about the nature of reality, including how it can be known; and
the prospects for fundamental technological change

Through critical readings of a wide variety of texts ranging from epic poetry to 20th century philosophical novels, students will learn how literary texts can be used to illuminate the connections between the mind and the body. This unit will be delivered via a mixture of distance learning and face-to-face sessions. Online learning is available for those who are unable to attend in person.
