This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of Arabic language and culture for students who have studied Arabic previously, or who are working on developing basic skills in the language. In this course, we will explore how Arabic is spoken in different regions of the world, including North Africa, the Middle East, West Asia, and North America. Additionally, we will explore how people communicate in everyday life using written and oral language. We will also discuss topics such as Islamic history, religion, social customs and stereotypes.

In this course, students will learn Arabic language skills in writing, speaking, and listening. They will be introduced to essential vocabulary for social, academic and professional communication. Students will also learn the grammatical structures of the language using a communicative approach. Students will write and speak in oral form in a range of contexts and evaluate the effectiveness of their own and others’ written work. Prerequisites: LAR101 or equivalent.

Course Description
LAR211 is a course for students wishing to learn Arabic language and culture. The main focus of the course will be on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in authentic situations and real-life contexts. There will be an emphasis on the study of selected topics that are common to all Arabic-speaking countries, including general information about these countries, their geography, social life and culture.
The course syllabus includes both written and oral presentations in English.
LAR211 Course Faculty Qualifications
is an intermediate Arabic language and culture course for advanced beginner or above students. This course will focus on the Islamic vocabulary of daily life, such as food, clothing, and home furnishings; also foodways and family relationships. The course also emphasizes reading, writing and speaking the Arabic language and culture. A critical look at Arabic-speaking societies will be given by discussing Muslim cultures, Islamic practice, Islamic traditions and modernity.
