The purpose of this course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of the key elements of the American nation, with an emphasis on the history and development of democracy in the United States. In addition to traditional historical themes such as slavery, social change, and political conflict, students will examine contemporary social movements in America. They will learn about the central role of race and ethnicity in shaping national identity. Students will examine a range of topics including the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Rights Movement, and Immigration Reform
