Course Information This course focuses on the history of exploration and settlement in the Americas from the first contacts to the rise of New Spain and Great Britain.

The course examines major events and figures as well as their impact on political, social, cultural and economic development in Spanish America. It looks at key turning points in this process such as economic boom, conflict between church and state and changes in political institutions. We will examine these factors through a comparative perspective, particularly focusing on the regions included within Spanish America: Mexico
