This course introduces students to the history of dictators and states that have emerged from the period of World War II and the Cold War. Through study of primary sources, including newspapers, memoirs, and speeches, students will develop a sense of the motives that made certain leaders successful. Students will also study the historical reasons for why certain regimes failed or could not be maintained. Special emphasis is placed on creating a sense of what it means to rule in a modern democracy.
