The purpose of the Modern War and Society course is to deepen students’ understanding of contemporary society by focusing on war, its causes, consequences, and historical significance. Students will explore the interplay of history, technology, gender, religion, society and economics in war. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

To provide a historical and cultural analysis of international relations that explores the interplay between power, conflict and international order. The course will examine major actors and their roles in the study of international relations (IR). In particular, it will focus on the key issues and debates which shape IR theory today. This includes topics such as political conflict, globalisation, regime change, social movements, terrorism and transnational civil society. The course will be an introduction to what is now known as the global South. The

The course is designed to provide a systematic study of the principles of war and society, both historical and contemporary. Students will study how people survive in war; both within the context of their country and also globally.
