This course is designed to introduce students to the study of the Middle East in the period from the fall of Rome to the coming of Islam. We will examine how the ancient Near East was a dynamic, complex and diverse region, where civilizations were shaped by cultural, religious, political and economic factors. The course will cover all aspects of life in Mesopotamia, Syria-Palestine, Egypt and North Africa, as well as a number of other areas with important contributions made by these early civilizations
