Course Description for HIS200 – Applied History (HIS200) This course will explore the social, economic, political and cultural aspects of the history of cities. We will examine the city through an inter-disciplinary lens to understand how urban environments affect and are shaped by global forces and specific historical processes. The course will include a range of readings from historical sources as well as current events. Students will develop their own critical analysis skills and employ various types of writing that reflect the course objectives.

Course Description: This course is an introduction to basic methods of historical research. Students will explore the scholarly literature in a particular area, with an emphasis on identifying and analyzing primary sources, utilizing and creating a database, constructing a bibliography for that source, and writing a historiographical essay based on primary sources. The course will give students practical experience in the collection and analysis of primary source materials related to various periods in American history and provide exposure to the variety of methods used by historians to address broad topics.

The prerequisites for this course are the study of European History 2 and 3 and the introduction to modern Europe (HIS200). A knowledge of these subjects is required for this course.
