ENG558 Course Introduction

This course is designed to teach you how to write a thesis for your poetry paper. Students will learn about student research, academic writing, and revision and editing strategies. They will be given 1-2 readings per week. Please note that this is the approximate start date of this course and it is subject to change. You may not enroll in this class before the listed enrollment date. In general, the start date for this course will be either Fall or Spring Semester.

ENG558 Course Description

The Poetry Thesis Completion (ENG558) course is designed to help students develop their research skills and prepare for the oral examination in the fall. In this course, students will be introduced to the research process and given the opportunity to conduct independent research with a faculty member. Students will also work on developing their own poems and preparing for their oral defense of these poems. A minimum of 2 poetry readings is required during the semester.

This is the culminating course for ENG 558 students. Students are required to write a thesis of some significance to their major. The class is taught in an intensive seminar format and includes both lectures and in-class exercises. Students will produce a final portfolio of ten poems, one poem each week. Essays will be analyzed and critiqued by the instructor, as well as other members of the faculty.
