ENG551 Course Outline

This course requires a thorough investigation into a topic or theme related to the arts, sciences, humanities, social sciences or other disciplines. The focus is on developing the thesis statement and conducting research in order to complete a substantive paper that fully develops a student’s ideas regarding the topic of non-fiction. Students will develop a document that outlines their argument and connects this document to the concepts of non-fiction, literature and writing. Students will present their ideas for a public audience at an end-of-course presentation.

ENG551 Course Objectives

Course Learning Outcomes (CSOL) Written and Oral Communication. Students will demonstrate mastery of written and oral communication skills by producing a thesis consisting of an argumentative essay and at least two 2–3 page paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence. Written and oral communication skills will be developed by applying the scholarly writing process and conventions.

This course is a capstone experience to integrate all previous coursework in the major. For students who plan to use their CSOLs for graduate school, this course
