EDU501 Course Outline for EDU501 – Methods of Teaching Reading (EDU501) The Program Descriptions indicate the credits awarded for each subject taught. The number of hours in a course will be as specified in the schedule of classes. 1) Identify factors that contribute to reading achievement and the development of students’ comprehension skills. 2) Compare different forms of assessment used for developing students’ reading comprehension skills.

Course Description – This course presents a comprehensive analysis of pedagogy and the art of teaching reading. The focus is on learning and teaching reading strategies in order to improve instruction for struggling readers. Both general and specific strategies will be discussed, including vocabulary development, making sense of text, metacognition and phonics. In addition, the course will explore how all of these techniques can be implemented with students in grades K-12.
