Course Description The purpose of this course is to support individuals in their efforts to develop and refine their expertise in the analysis, planning and implementation of participatory, community-based approaches to achieving sustainable development. The course will take a participatory design approach by using participatory tools and methods that are appropriate to the cultural context in which it is being applied. Students will gain experience applying participatory principles through community engagement activities and providing feedback on policy documents through stakeholder workshops, focus groups or other participatory processes.

Practitioner research is an applied professional research methodology. It is designed to be a more systematic and rigorous version of practitioner inquiry than that found in the traditional sciences. Practitioner research addresses a real-world problem, and it has its own rigor, assumptions, and ethical rules (ASTA, 1998).
