COM321 Course Description
This course examines the role of culture in communication across a variety of media. It considers the diverse issues, contexts, and audiences for intercultural communication. The principal topics include cultural differences in interpersonal, small-group, and mass media communication; cultural dimensions of language, gender, race/ethnicity; cultural dimensions of technology; and cross-cultural communication research methodologies. Students are encouraged to take this course as an elective. Prerequisite: COM 202 or instructor approval

Topics covered include: the use of English as a second language (ESL), cultural differences in personal, family, and social communication, cultural differences in international business, media and news, nonverbal communication (body language), and intercultural communication theory.

All students should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of the global environment and understand how communication in diverse societies is affected by it.
Analyze the major theories of communication, their application to the social sciences and their implications for cross-cultural communication.
Describe specific cultural perspectives on communication including methods of research and data collection techniques used in global communication research.
Describe globalization as an academic discipline, including its theoretical underpinnings, historical development and key issues.

COM321 Course Pre-requisites
: The first course in the program is COM321, which prepares students for a wide range of careers by combining an understanding of international communication with an understanding of global politics and economics. This course examines key issues and themes in international communication, including culture, media, education, law and religion. Students examine topics ranging from media technologies to foreign policy in Central America. Prerequisite: COM121 or equivalent. Fall semester, 3 hours per week.

The course will examine the challenges and opportunities facing societies today, especially those of the United States and China, that have specific implications for communication professionals. Students will gain understanding of how global communication is affected by issues such as globalization, environmental concerns, economic development, ethnic and religious diversity, technological changes, mass media and political change. Students will also explore the relationship between intercultural communication and globalization

1. This course focuses on the study of the concepts and tools of communication in a global setting, including trends in intercultural communication, intergroup relations, identity, symbolic interactionism, social constructionism, and various theories of institutional communication. The course emphasizes the integration of substantive theoretical perspectives with practical application to contemporary communications issues and practices.

Online, live interactive classroom mode of instruction is the most effective learning method for this course. The instructor will provide the class with a virtual classroom through which students can interact with each other and the instructor. For this purpose, the instructor will have a virtual whiteboard, an online chat feature and will use an online PowerPoint presentation for class discussions.
