In the United States, it is not always the person who commits the crime that is punished. Some people are simply sentenced to time in jail, or even a prison sentence, while others are treated as probationers instead of convicted felons. The court system handles some offenders differently than others. A person who has committed a serious crime may be sentenced to probation rather than being sent to jail.
