3 credits Open only to those students who have completed the course CJC303 and/or CJ401. An introduction to correctional administration in the United States with emphasis on private and public corrections as well as alternatives to incarceration. Specific examples of correctional administration issues will be presented. Topics include: field experiences, institutional management, organizational development and design, organizational structure, personnel policies, budgeting, planning for the future, technological advances in correctional facilities, victim services, safety and security issues.

– COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of correctional administration. It examines the operational roles and responsibilities of correctional officers, and students learn about the various components of a corrections facility. This course includes lectures, discussions, presentations, field trips, and community service activities that prepare students to successfully complete their work in CJ323. Students will also participate in a criminal justice practicum experience in which they provide supervision of groups of correctional officers.

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an overview of the criminal justice system, including its origins and structure, processes and procedures, and use as a social control mechanism. This course will also include an overview of the role of law enforcement agencies in the United States, including different types of law enforcement agencies (local, state, and federal) and how these agencies are structured.
