This course introduces students to the history, current state and future of corrections in the United States. Students will examine how such systems of punishment interact with a variety of modern-day social problems and examine how such systems have changed over time. In addition, students will investigate past and present criminal justice policy issues. The course utilizes

This course covers the basic principles of criminal justice and corrections in the United States. Topics include corrections as a social institution, the role of women in corrections, correctional supervision and management, the administration of justice by probation officers, and emergency preparedness. Students learn about different types of prison facilities including juvenile detention facilities, drug treatment centers, correctional education programs, and private prisons. CJ 320 also provides an introduction to the use of electronic monitoring technology.
