Course Overview: This course is designed to introduce you to the different aspects of working with living organisms. You will be exposed to a variety of organisms, including microscopic, eukaryotic, prokaryotic and fungi. Biological systems range from simple single-celled organisms that are composed of one cell such as bacteria and yeasts, to complex multicellular animals that require the support of other cells such as for example insects. The goal of the course is to provide students with the opportunity to pursue an independent research project in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology. Students should plan to spend approximately 25 hours per week working on this project. This time will consist of reading and writing assignments, as well as preparation for required discussions and presentations. A “capstone” is the culmination of a student’s academic work at Miami University
