BIO212 Course Introduction

Course Introduction The laboratory course in Microbiology for BIO212 is an introduction to the basics of microbiology, including descriptions and definitions of the various microbial forms; identification of common and important bacteria, fungi, protists and viruses; evaluation of diagnostic tests; and clinical applications. This course is designed to provide students with a foundation for their independent study in microbiology, as well as an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in using laboratory equipment. Each student will be required to complete an individualized project as a

This course will examine the principles of microbial diversity, epidemiology and control in humans. Students will develop an understanding of basic methods of microbiological examination, including plate counting techniques, and acquire knowledge of biosafety measures. Laboratory exercises will also introduce students to the application of standard microbiological techniques to clinical samples and to the analysis of environmental samples.
