The course is based on a semester long plan developed by the AS401 Executive Committee, which incorporates topics such as the National Security Council structure and its relationship with the Cabinet, key elements of national security policy, U.S. national security activities and responses to external threats, critical infrastructure protection, and current domestic and international issues that affect the U.S.
