Overview
This course aims to develop skills for critical thinking as well as communication in relation to public health nursing practice by providing a forum in which students are able to share their experiences in public health nursing practice with their peers, faculty members and lecturers. In addition to delivering specific core content on the key concepts involved in public health nursing practice, this course will also introduce students to research methods, population-based data collection methods and public health evaluation methods.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course students will be able to:
a) List the main theories used in public health nursing;
b) Summarise various theoretical perspectives that guide the practice of public health nursing;
c) List ways by which nurses may apply different theoretical perspectives as a foundation for their practice;
d) Describe how to conduct research into major issues related to public health;
e) Compare approaches taken by different countries in addressing major issues related to public health; and,
f) Analyse issues such as education, population aging, environmental hazards or economic factors that influence decisions about prevention strategies.

Assessment Tasks (Learning Outcomes)
In order to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes and increase engagement with learning activities, students will be assessed using a variety of assessment tasks through exams and group work assignments.
Communication Skills: These tasks aim at developing skills necessary for effective communication within academic environments e.g., written presentations, email writing etc.
Critical Thinking: This assessment task aims at developing students’ ability to think critically about real world situations, making connections between theory/practice e.g., information literacy skills etc.
Research Methodologies: This assessment task aims at developing skills necessary for conducting research e.g., literature review etc.

Reading week is normally set during week one semester two. It is an opportunity for students not enrolled on any courses during this period to study or catch up on matters that they missed during semester one.
Examination Period:
Students are expected not only attend but participate actively in all class sessions throughout the examination period from Monday – Friday excluding Saturday & Sunday. There will be no examinations conducted during these four days due to professional development activities being held throughout these days.
Practical Period:
The practical session begins from Monday – Friday inclusive of Saturdays & Sundays with early morning break between Monday – Wednesday only i.e. six hours each day from Monday – Thursday inclusive. The practical session ends by Sunday afternoon.

Face-to-face lectures/presentations give you opportunities to ask questions on different aspects relating directly or indirectly associated with your particular area(s). You will also have chance express your opinion concerning your lecturer’s lecture/presentation as well as discuss relevant ideas with fellow classmates using appropriate language either individually or collectively within discussion groups where individual/group input is relevant towards understanding the topic presented and working out solutions/corrections needed through group discussion/debate method.

Graduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing Practice (School of Health Sciences)
The MSc Public Health Nursing and the Graduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing Practice have been jointly developed by the University of Wollongong and the School of Health Sciences.
This unique dual degree is designed to provide students with an advanced understanding of public health nursing. Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and professional competencies required to practice as a public health nurse within a range of diverse contexts including healthcare and community-based organisations.
Students will complete 45 credit points of compulsory courses offered by both disciplines which together form the first year. In Year Two, students may choose to pursue either pathway in addition to their compulsory requirements or undertake only one pathway at a time. Completion of this dual degree offers graduates with additional options for employment, further study or advanced clinical practice roles.
Graduates who complete the combined MSc/PGDip/Public Health Nursing will be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing Practice.

Briefly explain the significance of your chosen case study, and provide a rationale for choosing it.
Discuss how you could approach the case study, using both nursing knowledge and professional skills.

Prepare a presentation that addresses all key aspects of the assignment, including development of research questions, data gathering, analysis and synthesis. Note: For this assessment you are required to submit a report as part of your submission. Include an executive summary as an appendix. The Executive Summary is an overview of your full report that allows reviewers to understand what you have done in your report as well as what is important about your research or analysis. Annotated Bibliography:
Each student must complete two annotated bibliographies on two separate selected topics from either ‘Importance of Body Systems’ or ‘Signs & Symptoms’. Each annotated bibliography must be approximately 2000 words long (not counting references), double spaced with Times New Roman font size (12pt). Footnotes must be used throughout the document with no italicised text or graphics inserted into them.
There are no set word limits for these two annotated bibliographies; however, students will be expected to demonstrate evidence which demonstrates how their topic relates to public health nursing within their assigned topic area(s). Each student must submit at least one bibliography for each completed unit; however they may complete additional ones if they so choose.
All annotations must be included in the final assignment file named “Unit Four – Annotated Bibliography”.
This assignment should be submitted through Blackboard by Midnight on Monday March 14th via either Upload Option or Grade Center Link .
