NGR6703 Course Introduction

Module 1: Introduction to Advanced Nursing Practice (NGR6703) Module 2: Advanced Health Assessment (NGR6703) Module 3: Patient Assessment & Care Planning (NGR6703) Module 4: Client Education, Patient Teaching and Health Promotion (NGR6703) Module 5: Medical Technology & Procedure (NGR6703) Module 6: Clinical Decision Making & Problem Solving in the Clinical Environment (NGR6703) This module will explore the difference between health and illness, sickness and health, disease and health status; diagnosis, classification, etiology, and treatment of specific diseases. Nursing practice can be categorized as both medical and nursing care. The word “nurse” means someone who is educated to a high level of skill in caring for other people. Students are required to demonstrate that they have a basic understanding of the basic nursing process and the principles behind it. Students need to be aware that they are competent to initiate patient care planning within their chosen specialty area.

Students who have not yet received their visa invitation from NZQA must enrol in NGR6300 English Language Requirement before enrolling into this course.

Applicants with a Level 2 NZQA English Language Proficiency Certificate or equivalent may be considered if they have completed NGR6300 English Language Requirement. This requires two years of classroom based education in an English-speaking environment with either Level B or higher qualification.

Applicants with an International Higher Education Diploma Programme Diploma may also be considered if they have completed NGR6300 English Language Requirement with a grade A.

International applicants who are studying a full-time course including field placements must achieve:

Eligibility Criteria:

Completed secondary education recognised by local authorities as equivalent to tertiary education, including pre-university studies and any previous degree or diploma awarded prior to entering tertiary study

A minimum level of academic achievement of ‘A’ standard OR its equivalent in mathematics at Level C/D levels on the Australian Qualifications Framework OR Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

Course Description for NGR6703-Advanced Nursing Practice (NGR6703) This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the conceptual, theoretical and practical skills needed to meet the challenges of advanced nursing practice. It will focus on providing a high quality patient centred care experience, assessing, planning and providing care in acute health care settings in response to a client’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. The primary purpose of this course is to ensure that nursing students continue to develop the necessary theoretical, critical, clinical and practical skills needed for effective patient-centred practice. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to advanced patient-centred care practice

2. Demonstrate application of the interdisciplinary model in order to meet clients’ needs.

3. Apply concepts of optimal human functioning across various contexts.

4. Demonstrate effective communication practices in order to respond effectively as a member of an inter-professional team.

5. Communicate effectively as a nurse educator or learner at any level; apply active listening skills when communicating with clients, families and colleagues; make appropriate recommendations based on critical appraisal; and recognize how each individual’s values will influence professional practice

Course Structure

This is a one-year full-time study program. The total number of credits (ECTS) that can be earned through this program is 60 ECTS. Students are required to attend all classes during all semesters. No make-up classes are available for any scheduled class sessions. The normal class schedule is offered at the following times: Monday-Friday: 9:00 AM-12:00 PM; 2:00-5:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday: 8:30 AM-12:00 PM; 2:30-6:00 PM. There will be no classes on Saturdays or Sundays. Class sessions will be conducted either online or face-to-face depending on your location. Your specific schedule will be determined by the instructor based on class activities and assignments. NGR6703 Course Learning Outcomes

To provide and enhance skills of complex nursing care for patients across the lifespan

Apply advanced practice concepts and/or techniques (e.g., technology, evidence-based nursing practice) to meet patient needs in all settings

Demonstrate knowledge of the health system in Saskatchewan

Demonstrate knowledge of current trends in nursing practice and interdisciplinary health care.

The Practicum Component of NGR6703 is an opportunity to acquire clinical experience. Practicum experiences can occur at a variety of levels including: small practice setting (single patient caseload), large community setting (multiple patient caseload), and/or long-term acute care/long-term care facility setting. The minimum practicum requirement is 1800 hours in an approved practicum site. Minimum hours are based on number of case loads per shift. An approved practicum site has an approved Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist that oversees the registered nurse on duty.

Practicum sites may include:

large community settings: hospital outpatient clinics, outpatient rehabilitation centres, home care agencies, long-term acute care facilities, mental health clinics

long-term acute care facilities: hospitals, retirement homes and other long-term care sites
