The aim of this course is to provide students with a broad and in-depth understanding of the biological processes underlying substance use disorders. Students will learn how drug treatment affects brain chemistry, the role of neurotransmitters and receptor activation, the effects of genetic predisposition and developmental history on drug tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, and relapse. The course will examine how pharmacological treatments work by studying drug actions at receptors in the brain, the treatment process itself (i.e., engagement vs. termination) and key factors

This course will introduce you to the pharmacological factors that underlie substance use disorder and how these are developed and maintained. You will gain an understanding of the relationship between drug abuse and mental health, explore the contribution of neurotransmitters to addiction development, as well as the effects of drugs on neurotransmission and the central nervous system (CNS). You will also examine emerging approaches to treatment and explore a model for preventing relapse.
