Course Description This course presents an overview of the mental and behavioral health (MHB) nursing process. Students will be introduced to mental disorders, assessment tools, and diagnostic criteria used in MHB nursing. An emphasis will be placed on practicing the clinical skills necessary for safe care in the MHB setting. Prerequisites NUR2459 is a prerequisite for students interested in attending NUR2459: Student Development and College Success. Summer Grade Policy The grade range for this course is A-F. It is expected that students will take online courses throughout the summer to make up missed work or take exams when needed. Students are allowed one unexcused absence during the summer semester. Only excused absences will be considered for any other reason at the instructor’s discretion. The basic aim of the NUR2459-Mental and Behavioral Health Nursing course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of mental and behavioral health nursing practice and the concepts, research, principles and interventions involved in this area. The course also aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge regarding the assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation of programs for mental health care.
The course will incorporate advanced clinical competencies through clinical skills laboratories. Students will practice their theoretical knowledge by applying it to an actual case study. They will gain a thorough understanding of the history, epidemiology, pathophysiology, etiology and risk factors related to mental health disorders. Additionally they will gain knowledge regarding the latest strategies in addressing mental health needs in various population groups.
The course will emphasize on the key concepts of mental health nursing including: psychological theories of psychopathology; developmental theories of psychopathology; biological theories of psychopathology; cultural factors; social determinants of health; communication theory; ethical dilemmas (legislation); diagnostic procedures (assessment); diagnosis, treatment planning & management; community resources (treatment); intervention strategies (counseling & psychotherapy); therapeutics (medication); psychological treatments; cognitive-behavioral therapies and stress management.
Through their interactions with other professionals such as physicians, nurses , psychologists , psychiatrists , paramedical staff etc., students develop strong interpersonal skills including good communication skills needed for effective patient- care delivery .They also learn to interact effectively with diverse populations such as children/adolescents, adults/seniors etc.

Suicide/Trauma Reaction/Recovery Suicide/Trauma reaction/recovery approaches is an integrative approach that utilizes multiple perspectives to develop a plan of care that will help you move from coping with a trauma event to resolution. We will be looking at Trauma Informed Care which is a way of understanding our clients behaviors when they are confronted by traumatic events and considers their whole life experience as well as their background to understand how all this contributes to their reactions. The approach will be used when working with individuals who have experienced a trauma event such as violence or sexual assault. In addition we will examine many different types of traumatic experiences such as natural disasters/emergencies. We will also look at individual need in relation to the type of trauma event experienced. What happens after a traumatic event?
Effective Treatment Plan The effective treatment plan uses evidence based best practices and has goal oriented strategies that are individualized for each client. This plan includes interventions such as assessment tools assessing needs/challenges/coping mechanisms/self-care skills and intervention steps that allow you to identify what you can do now that will help you grow in your capacity so you can eventually face your challenges again more effectively without emotional overload or being overwhelmed.
Mental Health Issues Mental Health Issues refers to mental illness which is characterized by pervasive distress over an extended period regardless of cause. These issues often interfere with normal functioning such as school work or work place performance requiring treatment by professionals including physicians or psychologists. Mental illnesses include anxiety/stress/depression/disorders affecting adults specifically (i.e., major depressive disorder – MDD) & children & adolescents (i.e., ADHD). Students will examine concepts related to diagnosing and managing clients with mental health needs in order to enhance therapeutic outcomes. The role of psychiatry will be explored including its impact on the community, as well as the legal ramifications of psychiatric services.

NUR2459 Course Objectives for NUR2459-Mental and Behavioral Health Nursing 8 (NUR2440) This course is designed to provide students with an overview of physical assessment skills necessary to identify signs that require attention by a physician or other qualified healthcare provider. Students will examine factors influencing patient satisfaction.
Students will be able to identify normal motor movements which occur at birth as well as abnormal motor movements which occur during early childhood such as when children are learning to walk or crawling.
Students will identify normal bowel sounds including apical pulse in children.
Students will perform laboratory assessments needed for establishing a diagnosis based upon subjective findings and symptoms present in patients presenting with behavioral/mood changes or altered level/functioning.
Students will be able to correctly interpret a history pertaining to abnormal findings which may indicate cancer or any other pathological condition affecting the body such as gastrointestinal tract trauma or specific disorder affecting urinary system.
Students are expected develop skills relating to communication processes within interdisciplinary team settings based on a variety of theoretical orientations relevant to a variety of populations regarding their care needs. In addition these students should be able to describe the organization involved in delivering care under varying conditions including specific populations treated within various settings .
