Physical Inactivity Rates [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 2, 4]<

After reading the required resources for this week, let’s shift our attention to physical inactivity rates. As you will discover, a large number of Americans is physically inactive. Let’s take a look at global, national, state, county, and individual inactivity rates, as well as some potential health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle.

Global and National:

Assess the physical inactivity data on the World Health Organization (WHO) website including the Insufficient Physical Activity (choose “Adults, both sexes” via the “View more Indicators” tab on the top left) interactive map and the Prevalence of Insufficient Physical Activity Among Adults Data by Country dataset.

  • Which countries have problems with physical inactivity? Please name five.
  • How does the U.S. rank in terms of its physical inactivity?

State:

Examine the Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity: Data, Trends and Maps (choose your state, and select “Physical Activity” for category, and “Physical Activity Behavior” for Topic, as well as the most current year of available data).

  • List the percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in your state.
  • How does the CDC determine whether an adult is physically inactive or not (see Footnotes)?

County:

Evaluate your specific county’s physical activity rate via the American Journal of Public Health, 106(9), 1656-1662. doi:10.2105/ajph.2016.303326

Hi class,

  • Which countries have problems with physical inactivity? Please name five.

Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Brazil, and Costa Rica.

  • How does the U.S. rank in terms of its physical inactivity?

The U.S. ranks at 40% on the insufficient physical activity for both sexes.

  • List the percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in your state.

The percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in my state is 26.2%.

  • How does the CDC determine whether an adult is physically inactive or not (see Footnotes)?

Respondents were classified as participating in no leisure-time physical activity if they responded “no” to the following question: “During the past month, other than your regular job, did you participate in any physical activities or exercises such as running, calisthenics, golf, gardening, or walking for exercise?”

  • Compare and contrast the county data to the rest of the state and to the nation.

Henry County was rated number 38. In 2016, Henry county was rated at 27% on physically inactive and the state altogether was rated at 28% physically inactive.

Describe your personal contribution to the physical inactivity prevalence rate for your county. Is your physical inactivity level below, at, or above the currently listed rate?

I believe in 2016, I was probably above the current listed rate due to being in the military and we always have to be physically fit in order to maintain our job. As a law enforcer, I have to be able to perform task and be fit to do my job.

Assess two potential health consequences of physical inactivity or sedentary behaviors. Support your assessment with at least one scholarly source.

Without regular physical activity, our bodies can lose strength and the ability to function properly. Another consequence would be that we could gain weight and that is not good for our organs such as our heart. It could also lead to depression and anxiety which could also negatively affect our brain.
