Topic: What Is Branding?

In today’s society, the term “branding” is often misinterpreted. People often view visuals such as logos or physical materials as brands. While these items are important components of the brand, they do not carry the weight of branding at large. Branding is more how people perceive a product. For example, look at a Nike shoe. The shoe itself is not the brand. It is the item that is manufactured. The brand is the idea of the product, the emotional relationship a person has with the product to develop an overall perception. Therefore, branding is more than just the product itself: it is how a person engages with it. In your own experience as a designer, have you ever seen amazing products with weak branding? Describe your findings and share with your peers. Provide images and articles to support your discussion.

Topic: Telling Your Story in a Noisy World

In today’s society, there are over 325 million mobile subscriptions. When mobile subscribers are using their devices, almost half of them are networking on social media. If you were to go out into a public space and look around you, you would find at least one person using a device. That person is likely making a tweet, double-tapping a picture, or updating a status. Advertisers understand the significance of smart phones and are constantly developing and pushing mobile ads to reach the masses. Advertisers and companies everywhere are challenged with the task of developing materials that will stand out over all the noise. One way to stay above the clutter is to make your message crystalline clear and simple. How might churches tell their stories in a clear and effective way to reach those who are unchurched or who may be looking for a new church home?

Topic: Collaboration

Taking on the approach of collaboration can help a design team to achieve great results. Often in companies you will see departments that experience silos or take on a very individualized approach to tasks. When you embrace collaboration, it can open many facets of ideas and viewpoints to help develop a strong, successful design solution. In what ways have you benefited from collaboration in design or in other projects?

Topic: Asking the Right Questions

When faced with a design challenge with a new client, one of the most challenging tasks can be asking the right questions. When approaching an organization, it is important to dig deep and really grasp an understanding of who they are. Consider every detail as you ask questions to help build a solid foundation or framework to help inform your research and design solutions. What are some important questions you have asked clients to help you navigate the design process? How have these questions benefited you in your process? Have you ever left a meeting feeling like you did not ask enough questions? How did not asking enough questions affect your design process?

Topic: Design Identity

Now that you have done a large amount of research and have created a design brief for your Brand Development Project, you move into the process of development. When designing identity, it is your responsibility as the designer to pull together all the valuable information and generate a symbol that best communicates the essence of the company. Discuss and share examples of effective organization logos that include mark and/or logotype. Why are these designs successful?
