NUR3738 Course Introduction

course has been designed as an introductory course that introduces students to the nursing profession and the field of health care. Students will be able to build on knowledge acquired in their earlier NUR4030 Health Professional Practice 1 (NUR4030) course, gain more in-depth understanding of healthcare delivery and health policy, explore how nursing practice is influenced by international health issues and global perspectives, gain a broader understanding of public health and primary healthcare services delivery. This course is intended for students interested in becoming nurses.

NUR3738 Course Description

is a 3-credit hour, online clinical nursing course that introduces the student to assessment tools and how to use them. Students will work collaboratively with community based health professionals in clinical settings to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their coursework. This course focuses on the assessment of children and adults with chronic disease in home or other care settings. We will explore how to use an holistic approach including physical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, ancillary studies, interviewing and charting techniques. We will also focus on best practice for documentation of nursing care delivered within these care settings. The course requires students to be able to self-identify as a primary caregiver for a chronically ill child/adult as well as participate in collaborative care of those patients.

Prerequisites: NUR3737 or equivalent.

NUR3738-Integrative Nursing is an experiential course and it will require you to complete multiple assessments that are designed to provide students with the opportunity to practice nursing care, reflect on the process of caring for patients and to assess the appropriateness of nursing care provided. How do nurses provide safe care within the context of unit-based medicine boards?
In this discussion, we will examine how nurses protect themselves while providing healthcare services within a hospital setting including systems-level functions such as management, planning, delivery of high quality services (i.e., core competencies), safety and quality improvement activities as well as patient satisfaction activities such as communication systems.
