This course is designed to introduce the student to the concepts and techniques involved in planning, designing and managing sustainable built environments. Building components such as energy usage, material choice, indoor environment quality and comfort are considered in an integrated context.

Course Objectives:

1. Explain a variety of principles related to sustainable design from a practice perspective (e.g., LEED Principles)

2. Apply these principles to real-life sustainable design projects.

Students will be able to: 1. Design sustainable building models and simulate their energy use. 2. Measure the effects of design choices on the energy consumption of buildings, including passive solar, orientation, natural ventilation, and daylighting. 3. – Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM) – Advanced Building Information Modelling (ABIM) Modules of the course are listed in Section A.1 of these notes. BIM is one of the most significant developments in the building industry since the first computer was built for use by engineers more than 50 years ago. This course is designed to provide an understanding and experience of BIM technology as a means of improving existing building services designs and documentation through a variety of modelling methods and techniques.
