3 Units 3.0 Lecture 3 hours/week This course is a required first-year course for the Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) degree offered by the Counseling and Clinical Psychology Department at Walden University. Course Objectives: The course will focus on providing an understanding of the many theories that are available to counselors, and how they can be applied in counseling practice. A brief overview of the history and development of the various theories will be provided. It is expected that students will become acquainted with several different styles or approaches to counseling. Students will be expected to demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the key theoretical ideas in each of the following five major categories: Gestalt, Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, Rational

Theories of counseling are helpful when examining the theories that define counseling. Many are best known and most practiced from within the counseling profession. This course will cover several theories of counseling such as Transactional Analysis, Person-Centered, Reality Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and others. Some of these theories will be discussed in depth and some will be briefly introduced. The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with important theoretical models that influence counselors.
